Zoot Suit Riot

Zoot Suit Riot

In 1997 we didnt have enough money to record a whole new album, just a few songs. People used to show up at our merch table and say: Which one of these CDs has the most swing on it? The obvious thing to do was to make a swing compilation from our previous releases and record 4 new songs for it. Voila, Zoot Suit Riot was born. The double platinum success of the record has been a blessing as well as a curse. The blessing is that it introduced our music to a lot of people. The curse, is that sometimes there is pressure from the outside to limit ourselves to being merely an orthodox swing band.

Kids On The Street

Kids On The Street

I cant tell you how many times people tell us that this is their favorite of our albums. The grunge era was in full flower (1995) and we were louder, punker as well as more ska. There are oddball songs that are in kind of in an Americana vein like Silver Tongued Devil and Luther Lane. This record is kind of a meditation on defiantly hanging on. Irish Whiskey is probably the song most shouted from somewhere out of the crowd, and the one most likely to get somebodys head bloody and face smiling.

Rapid City Muscle Car

Rapid City Muscle Car

We built our own studio to record Rapid City in 1994. In many ways this is my favorite Daddies record. Instead of trying to search for a sound or coherent style, we wanted to whip the listener around as if he/ she was strapped into a roller coaster and experiencing stylistic G forces. Every track is almost the direct opposite of the last, but it all fits together. I remember thinking that I wanted people to concentrate on the substance of the lyrics. The form of each song is just a chosen delivery system for an idea.... music as something constructed, architectural and artificial as opposed to the popular BS, that music represents some kind of direct folky speech from the soul. Poppycock.

Ferociously Stoned

Ferociously Stoned

Ferociously Stoned was our first album. It came out in 1990. We were wilder then. I had red, white and blue hair down to my butt. It's equal parts fast swing, ambitious studio psychedelia, and hard crunchy funkiness. Think Cab Calloway, Fishbone, Oingo Boingo, and Brian Wilson. We really wanted to make animal/ body music at that time, and we began thinking of the studio as our personal sandbox.
