Susquehanna

Susquehanna was written mostly in 2007. It brings together some of our west coast, especially Latin, influences: Flamenco, Greaser Rock, Swing, Ska, Glam, Soca. It’s a lot about memory, about time.... the Susquehanna is an ugly, muddy, flood prone river back east that I grew up on. The album is about losses and continuing on. Its about love, doubt and fatigue.... and ultimately about gratitude.

White Hot Odyssey

During the Bush years, everybody in the Daddies, pursued side projects and personal stuff. One of these was Steve and Jason’s proto-punk/ glam band project: White Hot Odyssey. I guess it sounds like AC/DC, The Dead Boys, The New York Dolls, Ziggy Stardust... the kind of stuff that we grew up loving. It’s strutting, preening excess in powdered wigs, beauty marks, stove pipe hats  and Edwardian collars. Through it all Le Count d’ Monet examines what rock and roll is really all about.

Soul Caddy

Soul Caddy was conceived in 2000 in the aftermath of the swing craze of the late 90’s. We saw it as our opportunity to show all these new fans what we were really all about. The single from that record was a glammy look back at the 20th century we recorded with producer Tony Visconti called Diamond Light Boogie. There is Soul and Ska, and Swing and Glam and Psychedelia on it, in other words ...it is us. In it, I hear a lot of loneliness and resignation: I guess my reaction to the self satisfied dream state and icky values of the culture, on the precipice of 9-11. Its odd to say, but in retrospect, I think we could feel it coming. Fun music in spite of all that ;-).

Zoot Suit Riot

In 1997 we didn’t have enough money to record a whole new album, just a few songs. People used to show up at our merch table and say: “Which one of these CD’s has the most swing on it?” The obvious thing to do was to make a swing compilation from our previous releases and record 4 new songs for it. Voila, Zoot Suit Riot was born. The double platinum success of the record has been a blessing as well as a curse. The blessing is that it introduced our music to a lot of people. The curse, is that sometimes there is pressure from the outside to limit ourselves to being merely an orthodox swing band.

Kids On The Street

I can’t tell you how many times people tell us that this is their favorite of our albums. The grunge era was in full flower (1995) and we were louder, punker as well as more ska. There are oddball songs that are in kind of in an Americana vein like Silver Tongued Devil and Luther Lane. This record is kind of a meditation on defiantly hanging on. Irish Whiskey is probably the song most shouted from somewhere out of the crowd, and the one most likely to get somebody’s head bloody and face smiling.

Rapid City Muscle Car

We built our own studio to record Rapid City in 1994. In many ways this is my favorite Daddies record. Instead of trying to search for a “sound” or coherent “style”, we wanted to whip the listener around as if he/ she was strapped into a roller coaster and experiencing stylistic G forces. Every track is almost the direct opposite of the last, but it all fits together. I remember thinking that I wanted people to concentrate on the substance of the lyrics. The form of each song is just a chosen delivery system for an idea.... music as something constructed, architectural and artificial as opposed to the popular BS, that music represents some kind of direct “folky” speech from the soul. Poppycock.

Ferociously Stoned

Ferociously Stoned was our first album. It came out in 1990. We were wilder then. I had red, white and blue hair down to my butt. It's equal parts fast swing, ambitious studio psychedelia, and hard crunchy funkiness. Think Cab Calloway, Fishbone, Oingo Boingo, and Brian Wilson. We really wanted to make animal/ body music at that time, and we began thinking of the studio as our personal sandbox.
